021 Promotion of the Traditional Seed Banks
Ahmednagar: The Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra (BGVK), Ahmednagar organized a capacity building on ‘Seed bank’ for women from Kirnali, Valsang, Shirtav, Agadgaon and Babai. This training programme was held under the aegis of ‘Micro Enterprise Collectives Project’ supported by Tata Power Community Development Trust, Mumbai.
The main objective is to preserve the traditional genes that plant breeders need to increase yield, disease resistance, drought tolerance, nutritional quality, taste, etc. of crops.Five traditional seed banks have been established in project villages. More than 42 types of traditional seeds are collected such as Onion, Tuar, Moong, Matha, Hulaga, Gram, Groundnut, Bajara, Jawar, Wheat and various vegetables.
