305 Health & Hygiene Awareness Program for Adolescent Girls with Weighing Machine Distribution in Chavhanwadi, Adraki, Hingangaon, Tadawale, Mulikwadi, and Tambve Villages
Ahmednagar: October 2024: Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra (BGVK) organized a health awareness session for adolescent girls in the villages of Chavhanwadi, Adraki, Hingangaon, Tadawale, Mulikwadi, and Tambve in Satara, as part of the 'Rural Health and Nutrition' project supported by Cummins India Foundation. A total of 269 adolescent girls participated.
The session began with a welcome by the coordinator, Mr. Vilas Alhat, followed by an informative presentation by resource person Mrs. Anita Sonawane. The main objective was to educate adolescent girls on personal health, hygiene, menstrual cycles, diet, and nutrition. Mrs. Sonawane addressed both physical and psychological changes during adolescence, highlighting topics such as reproductive health risks, contraceptives, and sexually transmitted diseases. Critical issues like sexual abuse and substance abuse were also covered.
This health awareness program aimed to empower adolescent girls in these villages with essential knowledge. By understanding their bodies and health needs better, these adolescents are now equipped to make informed choices.
Weighing machines were provided to Community Health Workers (CHWs) to enable regular weight monitoring of children, helping to track their growth and development. The weight data was systematically recorded and analysed, allowing for early identification of malnutrition. Based on the data, children were categorized into three groups: Severely Acute Malnourished (SAM), Moderately Acute Malnourished (MAM), and Normal, enabling targeted interventions for those at risk. Regular follow-ups ensured the children received proper nutrition and care.
BGVK's initiative aligns with its mission of holistic empowerment for women, and more educational sessions are planned to benefit adolescent girls across rural areas in Ahmednagar.
